Tuxedo Tennis Club Facilities

Tuxedo Tennis Club existed prior to the City of Winnipeg Amalgamation in 1972. At that time, there were four shale courts. It was upgraded to six courts prior to 1980 with some City funding combined with Club funds. The original clubhouse was a redeployed hockey warm-up shack with no water available or washroom facilities.

In 2008 Tuxedo Tennis Club acquired the Short Game Golf Centre building located at Taylor and Waverley in Winnipeg and made arrangements to move it to the existing site. The building cost the Club nothing. A tax receipt for donation of the building was issued by Tennis Canada. The Club signed a 25-year lease with the City at that time. The addition of the Clubhouse has made the Tuxedo Tennis Club a far more viable organization with increased membership and additional programs.

Since 2009, the Club has spent over $50,000.00 on resurfacing four of the courts and on fence replacements. Ongoing maintenance and smaller projects have been completed by club volunteers.

In 2015 TTC embarked on a major redevelopment of Courts 1 and 2, providing regulation distance between courts, new fencing, court resurfacing and nets.  In April 2017, new LED lighting was installed on Courts 1 & 2 to provide additional playing time in the evening.  In 2021 and 2022, all 6 courts have been resurfaced.  These improvements were made possible by our club’s financial and volunteer investment, along with a substantial City of Winnipeg Community Incentive Grant and the Canada 150 Community Infrastructure Program.

In August 2023 TTC received the Arts, Culture and Sport in Community Fund (ACSC), Small Capital and Special Initiatives Funding approval to support the Tuxedo Tennis Club Hitting Wall, Court Lights and Spectator Area Improvements Project.  This is part of a club initiative to enhance the tennis facilities, and, is the result of close to 3 years of work, planning and project opportunity development. This ACSC program came into focus by several Board members as an opportunity designed to support community facilities such as ours.

TTC is pleased to receive up to $248,945.00 in funding through this grant program, which is designed to strengthen arts, culture, and sport engagement in our province and support enhancing opportunities for Manitobans to participate in programming and activities in healthy lifestyles.

A new Hitting wall and practice half court was completed in the summer of 2023 completing Phase 1 of the ACSC. We were honored to have the Hon. Heather Stefanson, Manitoba Premiere, Obby Khan, Minister of Sport, Culture, and Heritage, and Councillor Evan Duncan present for the official opening ceremony on September 11, 2023.  Preliminary work is underway on a mural for the north face of the hitting wall. The club will work in partnership with Take Pride Winnipeg to make this happen in 2024 and we are in preliminary discussions with a renowned Winnipeg mural artist.

Detailed planning, member input, design and preparations for Phase 2 works to begin in summer 2024.

Tuxedo Tennis Club is a not-for-profit organization and we still have our work cut out for us – contact the board to see how you can help out and definitely stay tuned for more project announcements!
